We have two Maple trees in our back yard which need to be replaced. They were planted by a local tree service about 10 years ago. The trees are sickly with few branches and fewer leaves. When planted the service mounded mulch about 6-8 inches deep all around the base. Within two years, roots were growing, exposed, across the yard. We had requested trees with no "whirlybirds", but the first Spring there were hundreds swirling all over the lawn and flower beds. We are trying to decide what variety to buy for replacements. There is a concrete block wall at the back of our property about 35 feet from our sunroom and we want to plant the replacement/s in that area for shade. We would like some type that is disease and drought resistant, without seasonal seed or debris to clean up (we expect falling leaves, of course), and without lawn-level root growth. Are we expecting too much? What kind of tree would you suggest?
If you want something fairly quick casting a long shadow but not spreading as widely as a tree of normal habit this one might do the trick. http://www.lakecountynursery.com/celebration.PDF
