It's the perfect time for more than Sorbus fruits. But first, a few leaves. Best of all - the katsura are starting to turn. The fragrance at the far end of of the North Garden knocked my socks off, and finally we found the Cercidiphyllum japonicum cv. Morioka Weeping that was the source. Here's Trochodendron aralioides. I've always paid attention to the flowers and fruits, so didn't recognize this interesting leaf arrangement without the label. The Woodwardia unigemmata has pretty fancy leaves (fronds) too. Also, before getting to fruits, I promised Paul and Maria Tracy, first-time visitors to the garden from Seattle, that I'd post the photos I took of them. They were very impressed with the Asian garden, said they'd have to come back to see the North garden. OK, fruits in many colours. Alangium platanifolium, blue fruits. And Melicytus angustifolius, blue and white. Schisandra sphenanthera - not sure if this dark pink is it or if it will match that wall. Ilex franchetiana var. franchetiana is sort-of a ground-cover looking thing, with nice red berries. Heptacodium miconioides fruits weren't what I was expecting. On some other clusters, we could see, though, the calyxes beginning to turn red, which is what is supposed to give this tree its winter interest. We're still waiting for flowers on this Schefflera delavayi. They're coming.
