I started these seeds a little early to get a head start on the short growing season we have here in New England. A. olivaceum A. x zoeschense A. palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' A. palmatum 'Shigarami'
We know that the chances that a seedling from a cultivar is unlikely to show exactly the same characteristics. But even if the new tree can't be "legally" called the same, we can sometimes have good surprises. I have some from seeds that germinated in the spring of 2021, about 50 of this cultivar. Can you guess what the parent tree is ?... I'm curious to see how they develop...
They look really great ! And so well-developped for 2-yr-olds, congrats. Maybe the red bark is due to some kind of hybridation. The leaves on mine are of rather light green, it should make a very nice contrast...
Maybe you could do like what florists do : they sometimes put some dye in the water where they keep some white flowers and they take the blue colour... Actually, I had never thought of it before, but I think I will try it ! <LOL> But I'm afraid that if the flowers take the colour, the leaves stay green. Anyway, I really think I'll do it...
I am WAY behind on that thread but I see blue maples are a current topic. I will watch the video from MrMaple
Looking great D! I'll be interested to see what the olivaceum look like; most botanists now think this is a synonym for elegantulum, but it does look different to me, at least the 2 times I've tried to grow it. I killed it twice, so still one try left, lol. Some cultivars to throw similar seedlings, mikawa is one of them: there's a boatload of named offspring around now. I guess maybe we can say 'Snow Kitten' is distinct! And of course 'Shigitatsu sawa' from which come all of the Ghost series. Yeah I've been meaning to watch that blue maple video too!
Hey E. I have some really interesting looking seedlings from olivaceum last year. I'm sure they might be hybrids or just young. So I decided to germinate more this year. Also, thanks for that info ill put that in my notes. I'm also growing a good bit of 'Shigitatsu sawa' because of that reason.
lone sugar maple seed sprouting after 4 (four! how??) days of stratification. i hope to diversify my maple collection, especially from asia/europe. what are some easily germinating asian maple seeds? im going to try Acer palmatum , acer griseum, and acer monspessulanum.
Good morning Soumil, they can surprise you. I like your choice of seeds to grow. All will run true. D
A. palmatum and A. buergerianum (the latter better adapted to your climate) are easy to germinate. A. griseum is much more difficult. See the thread quoted in a previous post abot griseum + GA3.
