Hello. I’m not sure what’s happened to my Sarcococca plants? I have had no issue whatsoever since they were planted over 12 years ago. They have needed minimal care and have been happy.

This Spring, the leaves have dried up and died. There seems to be black spots on some of them. The stems seem to be green and alive when I scratch.

Any idea what could have happened? Or what to do? Is it a blight of some sort? Or are they salvageable? It seemed to have happened rather quickly. They were fine a couple months ago...

    Thank you!

I suspect they fell victim to the same thing a lot of us struggled with — that nasty cold snap we had. I noticed the damage really didn’t show until quite a bit later. I have a Sarcococca in a pot on my patio in East Van, and it looks very similar to your pictures. However, I’m not giving up on it yet.

Just let yours be and see if they re-sprout. Regrowth may happen from the roots. Please don’t fertilize or prune until you see new growth, as that could stress the plants beyond their capacity to regrow. Yes, they’ll look raggedy this year but it’s worth it to give the plants a chance.
