When is it best to root cuttings?
How many buds do I need to leave?
I want to prune my fig tree of excess lateral growth when it is dormant.

You can root cuttings any time in doors. If you don't have a warm bright place inside, then wait till late spring. I root mine in a large plastic tub to control the humidity and a seedling heat mat underneath for warmth. I keep it around 85 F, & 80 to 90 % humidity.
Make you cuttings about 10 or 12 inches with at least 3 buds. 1 underground and 2 above. When you take your cuttings, leave at least 1" of stem above and below the buds.
