Can someone provide me with an explanation on this?

I've been researching the practice of root pruning to encourage fruit/flower production. I've read many descriptions of how to do it, success stories, pitfalls, etc, but none have explained why root pruning encourages fruit or flower production. Can someone help me out?

    Many thanks!

I'm not sure about this, but I think that it induces stress in the tree; and most plants are internally programmed to go into fruit/seed production when they are stressed or dying. It's a way of preserving the species when things aren't going well. I've used girdling on apple trees as a way to encourage fruit production; this might have an effect similar to root pruning.
