Today's finds in Riley Park (mostly 'Kanzan'): 17th & Carolina: 17th & Sophia: 20th & Sophia: 22nd & Fraser: 24th & St. George, 'Birchbark': 28th & Prince Edward: 28th & Sophia, 'Shirofugen' and 'Kanzan': 29th & Prince Edward, 'Ukon':
There are many 'Kanzan' trees in Mountain View Cemetery, north side near 31st Avenue, concentrated on the west side. Here's a half-avium half-'Kanzan', something so commonly seen all over this region now. Four 'Shirofugen' on St George between 28th and 29th were reported several years ago. Here are two of them.
I thought I posted these on May 1, but it seems only in my mind. Here is Alberta Street, 37th to 41st, a whole street of 'Kanzan' on both sides, and on 40th from Alberta to Cambie. And Mackie, 37th to 41st, a whole street of 'Kanzan' on both sides, and on 37th east from Mackie for about a block. In the park, across from Mackie at 37th, is a grove of five or six 'Kanzan', two of which are inside the golf course and the rest outside. On the park lawn off 37th somewhere around Elizabeth are three 'Shogetsu', a few years old now. These 'Pink Perfection' have been reported before. I think the ones that used to be long 37th must be gone now. These along the entrance drive will be gone soon; the flowers on one are all dried up, but those on the other are so beautiful. There are avium branches, though. Mid-golf course are two very nice 'Shirofugen' and one 'Kanzan'. I couldn't figure out a safe way to get to them, but they're visible from several places.
I found this one huge beautiful avium 'Plena' on the west side of Manitoba just north of 18th. It's way finished blooming.
Thanks to VanDusen/Bloedel Guide, Lisa Lennie, whose eagle eyes spotted the Pandora cherry tree amongst the conifers in Queen Elizabeth Park. In full bloom at March 1, 2015 on the top parking lot side of the Road leading to Bloedel Conservatory and Seasons in the Park Restaurant.
I went over to see that tree too, as I was in on the news, but Anne's photos are better than mine because she managed to get up to the tree. Good job, Anne. On the way, I came across this not too bad-looking 'Accolade' just coming into bloom on the Cambie median north of 26th. So the 'Pandora' up the hill in the park is in full bloom, and the 'Accolade', usually the second cultivar to bloom (not counting 'Autumnalis Rosea'), down the hill, not really in the colder climate of QE Park, is not in bloom yet.
Somei-Yoshino trees starting their bloom in Riley Park at March 9, 2015. At the NW corner of Woodstock and Prince Edward. In Queen Elizabeth Park, two locations: 1. At the edge of the Pitch n' Putt, Ontario and 33rd. 2. the Big One off the W. 33rd Parking lot, where the Japanese hold hanami gatherings.
Akebono trees starting their bloom in Queen Elizabeth Park, off W. 33rd Parking Lot, at March 10, 2015.
Stellata in bloom March 9, 2015, near top of the path by Duck Pond, Queen Elizabeth Park. Almost a month earlier than in 2013, as per post here: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showpost.php?p=310021&postcount=82
Across the road away from Queen Elizabeth Park's Duck Pond, the two Shirotae trees are in bloom at March 17, 2015. Two Akebono trees a little further, on the same side are still in good flower.
In bloom at March 17, 2015, around the Duck Pond area are: Umineko, Yae-beni-shidare and Star (Stellata). Across the road are Shirotae and Akebono, as per previous post.
The Sargent Hybrid trees along E. 27, from Fraser west to St. George, are in bloom at March 19, 2015.
The Umineko trees on both sides of St. George, from E. 30 to E. 31, are in full bloom on March 19,2015.
Mikuruma-gaeshi at 416 W 37, west of Alberta, is starting its bloom at March 21, 2015. Oddly enough, its sister Mikuruma one block east is still in bud.
Re: Riley Park - 18th and Sophia April 2, 2015 Last night noticed all the beautiful cherry trees lining Sophia Street most spectacularly between 17th and 18th but also trees along 18th. From a previous post I verified that they are mainly Kanzan-really lovely and in full bloom now April 2- I really love this street and its trees!
23rd Avenue East of Cambie is a beautiful street with a variety of ornamental cherry trees but due to the early season it wasn't until I got to Ontario Street that I could see any actually in bloom any longer. The Kanzan there between Ontario and Quebec are lovely now and in bloom-forming a canopy over the street! The streets east of Cambie in this section to Main are so quaint anyway this adds to their allure.
Large group of Ukon at QE park as you come down from Bloedel towards 33rd, on the south side of the drive towards the pitch and put. The yellow green colour catches your eye as you drive by, but if you get close there are some flowers with green striping in them, and a few were bleeding pink. The centres were also changing to deeper pink. I wondered if they may have been the other green one Gyoiko, but not enough green and not enough flowers that show this green striping??? anyway the pink mixing into the green was pretty nice. There seemed to be some of this nice pink/red also mixing into the bracts and bracteolate. The trees them selves go up and over and hang down like a curtain as you look towards the north and the dark green conifers across the drive make a great backdrop.
So you answered your own question. 'Ukon' can have quite a bit of green striping, or not. 'Gyoiko' have coarser, more green outer petals. They all bleed red as the flowers age. I like that photo of the stipules and the red leaf petioles.
One Pink Perfection tree in bloom along Queen Elizabeth Park's W. 37th/Columbia parking entrance, at April 6, 2015.
Yesterday I was walking up Yukon Street when I spotted a lovely tree at 295 West 23rd, that was not the dominant Kanzan currently blooming in my neighbourhood-Kanzan are beautifully lining King Edward as well as many of the smaller streets between Heather and Main…I took a closer look and figured this tree was a Shiro fugen, and sure enough I found a picture Wendy had posted in 2002…so it was interesting to see it 13 years later in real life! I am becoming quite a fan of this variety of ornamental cherry
