Burkeville is the little community on the way to Richmond off Russ Baker Way. This tree appears as a flash of off-white as you pass. It is located at 2211 Catalina off Hudson. The first 2 photos show it looking like a weeping form (shidare) but it is much lighter than Beni-shidare (see last 4 photos from VanDusen attached for comparison). You can see light hairs on pedicel and calyx (3rd to 6th photos) so it doesn't look like Snofozam which, like the Beni-shidares is just starting in VanDusen. This mystery tree is in full bloom on March 27, 2013. What do you think, Wendy? Is this a weeping mystery or not?
I think so, too. In Japan you can see more Shidare-zakuras (Ito-zakuras) than Beni-shidare. I saw a lot in Kyoto and Tohoku. It is a weeping variety of Edo-Higan. The calyx is tipically ulceolate. I always feel a small ball is inside. When I lived in Vancouver, no Shidare-zakura was known and even the white weeping cherries were very limited. But now you found many (or some??). If there are weeping varieties of Edo-higan, I think there might be not weeping Edo-higans in Vancouver or near by. I hope some scouts find it someday.
