I noticed this purple bloom on this rhodo that was just planted this year. (in late May) It is a dwarf and looks to be loaded with new buds for next year , why on earth would this be blooming now??

I know I live in the banana belt of the Lower Mainland (,Ladner )but to bloom at the end of September.

    Isn't mother nature grand.

Quite a few kinds flower in October or other times besides spring. Early-blooming kinds mature their flower buds so early in the growing season that some may open prematurely, in summer or fall. Certain ones, like 'Yellow Hammer' and 'Elizabeth' may make quite a showing in fall, yet still manage to present a substantial display the following spring.
