Common wisdom appears to be, that tomatoes should not be planted on the same spot two successive years. While I have been able to adhere to that up 'til now, This year I have only two spots available: one on which the sun cuts out mid afternoon and one with full sun, which housed tomatoes last year. What exactly are the nutrients, which would be missing? Can they be replaced with fertilizer, compost or (composted) manure? Or is all that an 'old wives tale'?
I'd just plant carrots and basil right alongside with them - this seems to replace whatever it is the tomatoes leach out. It also seems to keep bugs off the 'maters.
