On small maples that have recently been grafted, I often remove suckering branches below the graft. When it is a major sucker it is a no brainer to remove the unwanted growth. However, I always wonder if the added photosynthesis that occurs from the suckering branches would benefit the overall vigor of the newly grafted plant as long as there is no jeopardy of the sucker overtaking the graft. Your thoughts???
