Removing low shoots on young Gleditsia

    I have a 2 year old Gleditsia and it has sprouted little leaves at about 6" intervals along the trunk underneath the main canopy. I have heard that you should leave them when the tree is young in order to increase the girth. Is there any truth to this or should you remove them?
