okay I know very little about tree roots...while walking in lynn canyon today my son asked me why do the trees have red roots (they were evergreen trees) the roots where like pipes on top of the ground.
an answer for him would be great - thanks

Root colour varies from species to species. A lot of trees have brown or grey-brown roots, they're not always red. Often, but not always, the bark on the roots is the same colour as the bark on the trunk and branches.

You reminded me of one of my photos from Oswald West State Park along Oregon's coastal Hy. 101. A log with tree growing on it. Roots are dark red, tan and other.
