I have noticed that huckleberries (Vaccinium parvifolium) found on my property are almost always growing on a stump or nurse log. Just curious about whether this a prerequisite growing medium or what the specific requirements of this plant are relative to this observed preference (acidity, moisture, ?).
Red Huckleberry will grow in soil, but really prefers high amounts of organic matter, hence the tendancy to grow on rotting wood. When we plant this plant in soil, we encorporate rotting wood (this has worked best) or large quantities of wood/bark chips into the surrounding area's soil to encourage establishment.
