Red bark Japanese Maples

Are there any other Japanese Maples with red bark other then the Sango Kaku? If so, what are they?

I would say A.palmatum dissectum Tamukeyama. It has red petioles and dissected leaves 7 to 9 lobes,good spring display and holds its colour well in the sun. It has been around quite a while, the twigs and smaller branches are a dark red with sometimes an over cast of speckled white,looks good in winter. I would sugest grow it in a container.You should find it at nurseries who specialise in maples.

 

Thanks but I should have been more specific... I am looking for a red bark maple with green leaves and not a lace leaf.

I'd like to make one point regarding the number of red bark JMs (and this same point can be argued for most classes of JMs). Isn't enough, enough, with regard to the number of red bark cultivars. Most of the newer red barks I can't tell one from another. I know there are suppossedly finite differences (some being slightly smaller or dwarfish) but when does it all end. We have four 15 foot Sango Kaku stock plants on the nursery which throw a ton of seeds every year. At least half of the seedlings have various shades of red bark. I've never thought to propagate or name any of them (in fact we mow them over with a bush hog). Perhaps if something truely different came along (say white or blue bark), maybe, but I really don't think another red bark Acer palmatum is needed.

Just one of my few pet peves. Again, this same point holds for many classes of palmatums (how about green dissectums - we'll thats another topic).

Another red bark maple is Redwood A.P. Similar to Sango Kaku, but holds its red color longer. I have a Redwood, Sango Kaku, Beni kawa, and a Fjellheim. Fjellheim, in my opinion, is the best for red bark.
