This azalea bush had a lovely bloom in April/May and was growing in shade from September to May. We went away for 6 weeks, left it in part shade/ sun and came back to this ...

As we all know June was cool and wet so I think it's part of a normal defoliation cycle. This is the second summer. There are lots of small green leaves which are growing around the former bloom.

    Can anyone help please?

I'd be wondering about root rot etc. If you pull it up you may find there isn't that much there.

Did you fertilize them? The red leaves could mean necrosis from lack of fertilizer, although I've had some Azaleas on commercial sites that will get reddish leaves even when they are fertilized. They have continued to be healthy.

Some of the brown spots are probably from the rain.

How is your drainage? Is water splashing off of the roof? What was planted in that spot before?

Try scratching in and top dressing with some peat moss. The other thing I like to do is spray Iron chelate on both sides of the leaves and on the ground around the root ball. Soak it down. It couldn't hurt. This works great for yellow chlorotic leaves, but will also help to green up all of your plants.
