    My practicable experience.

I buy seedlings whatever is available each year or start from seed, and put them in the garden rather later than early, since peppers like warmth.

One of my four chilli peppers. I give this plant a shot of vinegar about one cup in a liter of water now and then to give an instant PH somewhat acidic. Trial and error! I admit, but people were growing peppers long before PH was even known. For a small garden this is sufficient. I just keep it healthy looking. Notice the fruiting bodies. No fertilizer just the compost mixed in the new bed. The bed is for a black current bush, but there was extra space so I planted two peppers along the edge. I add a support, since the vines usually cannot support the heavy fruit load produced in some cases.

Picking the first flush of chilli peppers. This is the produce off four plants, and there is about the same amount left to pick at a later date.

This is how I process the peppers, since I can never eat the quantity produced. The fruit is vine ripened, and the end removed, and dried in the shed over about three weeks. I put them in the blender and make them into small particles. They will be used as a hot paprika, as a condiment when cooking. 17 April 2007, I still have about 150 ml remaining from about 600 ml produced. this from about a 4 quart basket of peppers.
