We are looking to plant this to "green up" our privacy fence. It is a 6' wood fence.

Does Goldflame honeysuckle need a trellis or can it grow up a wood fence on its own?

It's not a very fancy solution, but, you could hammer nails into your fence and then loosely tie the vines to them. The plant growth will hide the nails and string (expecially if you use brown / natural twine instead of white string). Be sure to tie the string loosely so the vines have room to grow and you don't strangle them. You can easily direct the growth of the vines this way over your entire fence, plus, if you want to re-arrange the growth later on to fill in a bare spot, it's a lot easier than trying to untangle it from a trellis. Good luck!
