Is the Kwanzan double pink flowering cherry tree always grafted onto other root stock? I want to plant on Galiano Island as these ornamentals do well there. Small trees sourced in local Vancouver nurseries seem to have very poor grafts. Should one look for a graft to be close to the base of the trunk or further up?

    Thanks,
    Tara

You might be able to order one raised from a cutting through the mail, unless being in Canada precludes this. Or you could read up on raising these from cuttings and perhaps produce one yourself, since the tree is common it should be possible to locate a local specimen belonging to someone who will let you take cuttings.

Thanks for the advice. I do have an excellent tree to take a cutting from (it just takes longer!). Meanwhile I'll look for commercial growers on Vancouver Island who grow from cuttings instead of grafting. Galiano Island is one of the Gulf Islands with pretty tough growing conditions so I'd hoped to find a sapling. Never tried to mail order but worth looking into.
