I bought and planted an Italian plum tree just over a month ago. Now what do I do? I have been reading online and I think I should prune the central leader to around 36". The tree has 2 other branches and new growth all over. I am completely new at this. It is my first fruit tree. liz
Don't fret Liz! I'm not as experienced as some on here but I have done a little pruning. I would not do any pruning this year at all. That is because you want all the trees energy ( from the leaves ) put in to growing roots and just getting established. After that any pruning should be done after the leaves have fallen and started coming back in the spring. After that I would take one of the free pruning class most of the nurserys have early in the year. This year you are off the hook, just enjoy.
