Pruning or pollarding a curly willow

    This tree is only 6 years old. I think it has become more a liability than an asset. The roots are incredible! It cost good money 2 years ago just for a simple pruning. Now I'm going to really prune it back, so severely in fact, I believe it is called pollarding. If I kill it, I won't cry. But I was told that won't happen unless I cut it down to the ground.

    I spent half a day just to cut back 3 of the branches on one side. But it was the most difficult side, the rest should go more easily. Tough job though. I'm not the young monkey I used to be.

    So I'll keep at it for the next few weekends, and we'll see. It's early March here in Northern California, the tree has already started sprouting leaves, so this is not the best to do this job, but I could not get to it until now.

    I'll post more pics as this project progresses.

    Situation looks like it would work best to cut it off at just above the height of the trunk, so that it is not trying to grow back from below the level of the top of the fence.
