Is there a way to correct this? I've noticed in a few of my trees that there are two, even three branches competing for the lead. 3 out of the 6 I've planted have one obvious lead shoot, these 3 trees are increasing in overall height at a much faster pace than the trees that have competing leads. If I prune my problem trees at the top and create a single lead would it help or would I do more damage than good?

    No answer yet - that's a surprise.

Should be no problem in most cases to prune out a couple of leaders and leave one.

Or - you could shorten a couple and leave one.

Thank you for the advise. I live in central Indiana. Is there an optimal time to prune them? They are budding right now, some are done, some still in the process. Should I wait until they are finished?

    Timing isn't critical.

If the second leaders are large with several years growth, there's always the option of pruning in mid December for a free (if perhaps a bit lop-sided) christmas tree.
