There is a previous thread (from 2003 - http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=409&highlight=pruning+hydrangeas which recommends pruning hydrangea macrophylla in Vancouver in March. I always thought that this was the correct thing to do until this year. However, this year, my hydrangeas all produced very few blooms. About a month ago, I heard Brian Minter on CBC Radio One recommending that we prune hydrangeas right after they flower in order to get more prolific blooming. So, should I prune now or in March???
H. macrophylla flowers from buds formed in the previous growing season. It should be pruned after it flowers (unless you have 'Endless Summer'...it can be pruned either in March or after flowering). If you have H. paniculata or H. arborescens, prune in March (they flower from current season growth). Simon
