Hi there I live in Toronto Canada and I was wondering when would it be best to start propagate cuttings of grapevines and grow them in pots indoor then come spring put them outside to grow. I was wondering if someone can help me because I'm not sure when should I start.

    Thank You

Hi there--I've done other types of hardwood (winter) cuttings, tho not grapes. I don't think it would work inside.

The cuttings you take now need to develop roots without any topgrowth, so the temps need to be cool to keep the buds from sprouting and thereby exhausting the food reserves of the cutting before any roots are available to keep the baby plant going.

There is probably other info in this section about grape cuttings, but generally I would tend to cut bundles of cuttings, surround them with moist bark, and keep in something like a garner bin. This is a moist cool container with a bit of heat underneath it to stimulate the callusing and root initiation on the bottoms of the cuttings, without heating up the rest of the stems over the winter. Then stick the cuttings in spring in nursery containers in a cold frame, and hopefully the roots will develop in time to get the little plants off to a good start.

Good ideas, but don't give the bottom heat till about 8 weeks before you think you will be able to plant them out (4 weeks after the usual last frost).
