I just planted two currant bushes and my neighbour let me know that he destroyed his currant bushes due to currant worms. Is there a preventative strategy I should be using to ensure we can harvest currants? Is the worm that infests currants likely to infest my blue berry bushes? Thanks from a new suburban gardener.
No, this particular pest of currants will not affect blueberries. Long discussion about control methods in this thread. There doesn't seem to be a perfect method.
I think entity may be talking about little maggots inside the Currant fruit, not about the caterpillars devouring the leaves. Which do you have in mind entity?
There are several sprays that can be used to control Currant Fruit Fly maggots. It is important to spray at the right time: right after blooming is finished. Usually one application is enough. I've read that floating row covers placed over the bushes right after blooming will also work, but I haven't tried it. Since the pupae overwinter in the soil under the bushes, this would be most effective if you start this year before the fruit flies become established.
