Do you consider Oregon close? I think that is the closest you will find them.

While we're talking about poppies... last summer I collected a pile of poppy seeds from a bunch of dead poppies I found (not really a field). When is the best time to plant them? Would now be OK (January) since they start popping up in early spring?
    Thanks

Probably some California poppies growing wild on sunny hillsides up there, same as here. Shirley poppies are seen rather often in "wildflower" plantings, you'd have to catch a recently done one of these, before the "wildflowers" died out and grasses took over. Some people also have fairly big patches of very commonly planted opium poppies on their places, although anything big enough to be called a field would surely attract the attention of law enforcement agencies at some point.

Lots in gardens all over --- Surrey, too. Just throw the seeds on the ground and away you go --- very low maintainance plants.

I just saw some awesome poppy blossoms under the shaded canopy of a flowering pear tree this weekend.

Surprised me. I thought they needed more sun.

there are some beautiful orange-yellow poppies at St. Andrews Park in the City of North Vancouver. The park itself is quite nice with interesting children's play equipment, a granite interactive water feature and great southern exposure.

BTW I get very tired of the public perception that opium poppies, Papaver somniferum, are a threat to the public good. It takes acres to get anything like a workable amount of processable sap, and I doubt brewing up a tea from the seeds has any effect past the placebo.

When I was a wee thing, mommies would steep a tablespoon in milk for their babies' bottles. Reputed to be calming, I doubt it had much of an effect as the babies thrived.

They are a lovely, popping up here and there in gardens.
