I have a very tall and very old ponytail palm that I was about to sell for $100. Then I read on this forum about ponytails with multiple shoots being very desirable and decided to bring it back inside instead. My plant is 30+ years old and has 5 or 6 offshoots on the main stem! When bringing it back in the house, I accidentally knocked off the top, making it small enough to keep in my living room again, but I am still considering selling the main plant, only asking more for it. I do have pictures if anyone wants to see them and can give me an idea of the value. Also, can I root the piece that was knocked off? It's really only about 3" of stem but has the really long fronds on it. Thanks!! Kathy Lentz

    Ponytail Palm propagation and value

I posted this in an old forum yesterday and apparently that post hasn't been read. I have a 30+ yr. old Ponytail Palm that has all but outgrown my living room ceiling height. I had put it up for sale for $100, then when I started reading about them I realized it's probably worth much more. It has several side shoots on it, and it's beautiful. However when I went to move it I knocked the top 3" or so off the top, which took about 6" total off the height of the plant. I've sealed the wound on top of the mother plant with wax, and I've put the piece that broke off (with long gorgeous fronds) in a vase hoping to root it. However, I'm not sure if I should root it in water or use rooting medium and just plant it in dirt. I also would be curious about the actual value of the large plant. I'm attaching a picture showing one of the offshoots. Thanks! Kat
