    hi
my mum's had this plant for a long time and it was very healthy and lots of very green shoots coming out of the stem jst like very thing long strands of grass almost. but then i think it may have gotten cold or something and almost died.. bringing it back to just a single green shoot.. then i took it to uni with me to try and make it more halthy.. it's now got 3 shoots but they're all really brown and is not looking healthy at all.. it would really help me in looking after it if i actually knew what type of plant it is but nobody seems to know.. can anyone help me??
    thankyou in advance

The pic is a bit hard to see but it might be a "pregnant onion" Ornithogalum caudatum. If so, it gets succulent culture: fast draining soil, water when fairly dry, lots of filtered light. Looks like the soil is very wet; I'd let it dry out a bit.

The prop roots make me think this may be a palm fallen on hard times... Leaf structure doesn't look quite right, but it's a possibility, anyhow.

Oh, can't see the prop roots in the pic on my computer, or wouldn't have suggested the onion, which is a big bulb with the roots under it, just like "regular" onions. Sorry!
But those leaves ...don't look very "palmish"! Anyway, good luck.

My initial thought was a palm as well, based on the trunk and root structure, but I agree the leaves don't look right, unless they just haven't opened yet due to the conditions...

My thought was that what it's got is the best it can do right now... May also be constricted by the previous growth. Regardless, looks to be a few years old, and to have never really been cared for preoperly. You've got an uphill battle, I'm afraid, but there is still hope. I'd say give it plenty of light, maybe a bit of Miracle-Gro, and keep me updated. These things don't happen over night, I'm afraid, so just baby it for the next few months.
