I'm new to the world of fruit trees. These cankers were all over my plum tree this summer, but the tree didn't seem to suffer. I don't think the tree has been pruned in 20 years. What are these growths? How do I deal with them? Thanks, -Kat
Prune off the effected branches cutting well below the cankers. Sterilize your tools after each cut and dispose of the branches in the garbage/recycling. Don't put them in your yard compost. Prune when it is dry and not windy. You may be able to spray some-thing like a copper spray after the leaves fall off for the year....but Victoria has a pesticide bylaw. I would check the city webpage for restrictions and/or speak to some-one at a local nursery who is a government licensed pesticide applicator and is experienced with fruit trees. This is a common problem with plums.
