Identification: please help identify!

    Looks like a Bromeliad of some sort. Cannot tell you a specific one though, sorry.

    Thank you so much for the identification!

    now that i know i have an Aechmea fasciata, i have a question about watering. the plant store where i bought it told me to make sure that there is water in the cup of the plant, but that there is no need to water the soil at all. in addition i should empty the water in the cup of the plant about once a month and refill it with new water in case some of the old water is stale. is this type of care correct? should the soil not be watered as the plant store indicated?

    Yes, water the "urn", and after it blooms the main plant will probably slowly die and produce "pups" which can be propagated. Just do a google search and you will find a lot of information.
