In the spring of 2008 I will be planting 6 - 3 foot (approx) emerald cedars in a planting bed that is currently under construction. I have dug out an area that is 40 inches wide and will be spacing the trees approximately 3.5' to 4' apart. What would be the best planting soil (soil/manure) medium to use? I will fill the trench cavity with whatever is recommended.

It would be better to plant them now (fall) than then (spring). Spring is actually a pretty poor time to plant, for multiple reasons. (Obviously, tender plants that would freeze during the winter otherwise have to be set out in spring).

Refill trench with same soil that came out of it, without modification. Mulch after planting, keeping it off the stems and water well.
