    Hi all,
My next project is to create a planter box against the foundation of my house for a mix of annual and perennial flowers and ornamentals. Currently there is an ugly path of concrete around the perimeter of my house (fortunately it slopes away for good drainage) and I am trying to determine whether I need to remove it to achieve the depth I require. By laying a waterproof membrane against the foundation and concrete path and ringing it with stack-stone I would be able to get about a 12" deep box of soil. Also, it is partial to full shade so my choice of plants would reflect that.

So my question becomes this; is 1 foot of depth (below which would be concrete) adequate to plant most flowers and ornamentals? If there are some that will work and others that won't, which would be the ones that won't?

    Thanks all!

Soil depth shouldn't be a problem as long as you have proper drainage through the stack rock outer perimeter wall. You don't want to make a bathtub...
