Hi all, I took these photos at UBC and SFU. Are these two plants all false Solomon's seals? Just the inflorescence of them look a little bit different. 1. took at UBC 2.took at SFU
1. Looks like Maianthemum dilatatum..common name False lily of the valley. Maianthemum dilatatum - Google Search 2. Looks like Maianthemum racemosum...common name false Soloman's seal. Maianthemum racemosum - Google Search
We also grow Maianthemum racemosum..the plant is strong and healthy with masses of flowers.however it rarely sets berries which is a huge disappointment...see pics. Flickr Search — "Maianthemum racemosum." Years ago we were warned never to plant Maianthemum dilatatum as it is an invasive thug here.
My False Solomon's Seal sets some berries but not as many as I would like. I sure has gotten big! I thought I'd given it plenty of space but it wants more. I learned only this year that M. racemosum is not to called 'Smilacina racemosum' any more . . . and Smilacina stellata is now Maianthemum stellata. Yes, False lily-of-the-valley can really take over here too - beautiful in the woods but aggressive in the open garden. I have a patch where it is confined by foundation walls and I also grow some in a pot where it grows thickly and blooms nicely. I resent the 'False' adjective in their common names because it seems to imply that they're phony or second-rate . . . which they are not!
