Well, I'm new at gardening and was hoping that I could get a garden planned for spring. My life gets busy during the holidays and would like to have everything planned out before Thanksgiving. I have decided on the raised bed and I know what Vegetables I want to grow in my garden. Here's a list of them.

    • Broccoli
    • Carrots
    • Celery
    • Cucumbers
    • Jalapeno peppers
    • Onions
    • Potatoes
    • Snow peas
    • Green Peppers
    • Green Beans
    • Tomatoes

I am also planning on a small cornfield.

Any suggestions on how to lay it out would be great.

Sunny location with good soil and shelter from wind. Planning for crop rotation would probably be a good idea. Look for books and web sites on vegetable gardening, some of these will have representative layouts. Also seek guidance from North Carolina Cooperative Extension. Check on local suitability of any of these crops that may be questionable.

Thanks. I was just wanting to know how to lay out the veggies. What the best way would be because tomatoe plants and pepper plants grow tall where as broccoli and celery grow close to the ground and potatoes and onions grow underground. I know that a box shouldn't be over 4 feet wide and can be as long as you would like. So, what should I plant in the middle of the box and which ones toward the edges. What plants grow well together?

There is really no simple answer to your question. You want to grow taller plants on the north side of the garden so that they don't shade your other plants. How many raised beds are your planning. 3 would be ideal, then you can use a 3 years crop rotation. This will help reduce your pest problems. If you grow similar plants together, then you can move them to another bed the next year. You really need to do some research and buy a few good books.

    Good luck!
