Has anyone tried any palms in the phoenix family ? i was on a website reading that they are hardy to zone 8. Are we just too wet for a palm like that ?

Yes I have, and no, they're not suited to coastal BC. Having said that, I have a Phoenix canariensis growing in-ground that does get enclosed during winter. I've not had to supply any heat, only cover from the occasional frost, snow and seemingly relentless rain. The nearest ones that do grow unprotected are on the southern Oregon coast.
