We have two very well established peonies, both bloom beautifully, but they seem to be stretching too tall, about 3ft over the cage, so when blooming, all flowers are on the ground. Any suggestions why they grown so tall?
So any suggestions on how to keep them upright? We have them staked with Peony cages, but that just seems to make the stems bend over harder. Seems such a shame to have all the flowers lying in the dirt.
All you can do is identify or create an effective support system and put it in place before the flowers expand and pull the stems over.
Maybe try taller cages? Although that may be hard to do now, maybe a solution for next year. If this is more of a problem this year, it might be that the frequent rain is weighting the flowers down more than other years. If you don't like the look of cages, sometimes I cut pieces of vine or long fibrous leaves and fashion rings of them to hold things together. I find the natural cords more pleasing than wire and the price is nice.
