When we moved from our last house, I took a cutting of a peony that my late mother had bought for me and threw it into a pot. Last summer it flowered beautifully on my deck. I've put it into a corner to protect it during our harsh winter here in Pennsylvania. I want to plant it out in my garden this spring but I don't want to kill it. Should I wait for the fall or until it's finished flowering? Please advise. Many thanks!
hey, neighbor (i'm right down the road from you)!! welcome! you can plant it in early, early spring (before any shoots appear) or wait until fall. they do best when transplanted during cooler weather conditions.
Yes, I would plant it as soon as you are able to work the soil. Make sure the eyes are no more than 2" below the surface. Just as a thought, years ago I was told if I moved my peony in the fall that I could possibly lose a spring's worth of bloom, however, I not only moved them that fall I also divided in 2 sections and they never skipped a beat. So I would hope as long as you transplant before they begin to break surface you shouldn't lose out on spring blooms :)
