i need advice on pruning a pear tree . it is very old and hasnt ever been pruned.the trunk is about 2' across and 20 feet high.should i just clean out the center and shape the outside? its not mine just doing a favor ? for a friend.
if you can post a few pictures of the tree perhaps we can give you some advice regarding potential pruning.
Your idea sounds good in general. Be careful what you prune and when, so you don't chop all this year's fruit.
And if you can do renovation pruning over a several year period, rather than all at once, it usually works better. Severe pruning on a neglected pear tree may result in wild vigorous growth the following summer. Your idea of thinning out the tree and lightly reshaping is a good start.
