I am having trouble with peace lilies. The leaves begin to turn black and wither right from the time they open up. I am using potable water that has sat for 24 hours. When that runs out I use tap wate which is softened.
Softened water is full of salts and they're deadly to plants. If you can rig a take-off from the water line before it hits the softener and use that water instead you should be ok. Tap water is fine too.
I hear what your saying. Recently I have had access to potable water before it goes through the softner system. I fill up 5 gallon pails and let it sit over night to get rid of the chlorine. Unfortunately I think the damage is done with the lilies. I hoping to revive them. I am also questioning the drainage in the pots. From what I have read there should be gravel or something similar on the bottom to let the water drain through. I don't know how improper drainage affects the plants. Maybe repotting would be the answer. You are the second person who has mentioned the water softner. I will stick to the untreated water. Thanks for the info. Do you know anything about using Reverse Osmosis water? We have plenty of that here as well? TIFN . Cheers
Reverse osmosis is terrific for plants - if expensive. Don't put gravel on the bottom of any plant containers of any kind - it's been proven to actually be counter productive (to do with water tables, etc.). Just use plain water, or a soil mix to suit the plants.
Hi Plant Manager, I also let my peace lilies dry considerably before watering. They don't mind the dryness between waterings and mine sometimes actually wilt a bit. Newt
Thanks for the info. I'm going to try and repot them as well. If that doesn't work I may have to call in someone of the cloth to give them their last rites.
