I have a small paperbark maple seedling (Acer griseum ) that is currently in a 4" pot. I've never grown maple from seed before, and I'm unsure as to where I should have it, and in what size pot it should be in. I started it indoors after it was stratified outside, and now I've been hardening it off for a few weeks. Do I need to bring it in during the winter until it's older? The parent trees are outside but they are large. Any advice would be appreciated!
I fear you have a Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) seedling there! Presumably the seed blew into the pot from elsewhere, or a squirrel slipped it in.
That's weird, since the seed came right off the paperbark tree! I suppose a squirrel could have put it there, or it some how blew in (although that would be pretty random!) could it be a cross..?
Not a cross, no, the two species are not sufficiently closely related to be able to hybridise. Sadly, it is just an invasive species doing what it is best at . . . invading.
Nooooooooooo!!!!! well that's disappointing. I guess I'll try again next year, this time better cover the pots. :(
Acer Griseum is notoriously difficult to grow from seed, because, apparently, the seed is usually barren. Hence the high cost of these beautiful trees
I have a few of them as boulevard trees on my street, I guess the city put them there. I took the seeds off last fall and stratified them outside... but only the "one" sprouted, I guess that's why it sprouted, because it's been replaced some how!!! :(
