    Hi there:

I'd like to collect my seeds to replant next year. Is it important to let the pods dry out completely on the stem, or can I cut them and let them dry indoors.

The reason I ask is that lots of the pods are hanging sideways or even upside down, so if I have to leave them there, I'll have to put little bags over them so all the seeds don't drop on the ground......

    Thanks

Anytime after the holes form around the top of the pod, is fine for collecting.

I often collect the pods in a bucket, leaving enough stem on the pods that they may be used in dried arrangements. I've seen people keep the pods in these arrangements until autumn, before removing the seeds and sowing them.

When the pods are collected before the holes form, the seeds do not finish ripening. This can be a problem, as the goldfinches are eager to eat the seeds as soon as they are ready.
