On a hot and muggy day, June 29, walking thru one of the local parks in Florence SC (Pee Dee Area, 80 mi W of Myrtle Beach, SC-80 mi S of Fayetteville NC) I happened across these mushrooms on a white oak. The only data I find close is the Pale Oyster. They have the anise odor, but these are almost slippery to the touch. The edges are also notched (see photos) which I find questionable. Any help would be appreciated. If they are in fact Oysters, I'm set to grow them in my back yard on some old hardwoods as I understand they are very easy to start. Note: White spore print.
looks like I'm correct http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/pale-oyster:pleurotus-pulmonarius-photo-11712.html
Definately looks correct? And seasonally you've got it on the mark. It starts in the summer and grows through the fall from what I understand. Try this link for more info? http://www.mushroomexpert.com/pleurotus_pulmonarius.html
I'm getting different results on edibility where some sites state it's not very pleasant while others just the opposite.
Locally anything that is considered a Summer 'oyster' usually is left alone? The Fall/Winter true Oysters are much more desirable as I can attest to. I think these ones you have are more desirable for beauty rather then flavor.
