As is my habit, I try to save volunteers until I know what is each.

Last summer I transplanted an attractive 18"-tall twig to within 18" of the foundation of my house/basement. Now realize it is sourced to a betula (weeping birch) that I had professionally removed 3 years ago (it was @50 years old - diseased, with enormous, sewer-busting roots).

Can this little twig/tree (now 8' tall) be kept healthy if pruned to be limited at 8' tall and 4' wide? My concern is the roots breaking the basement walls. The time and effort is not a consideration: my yard is small and I have the desire/ability to prune as needed.

Otherwise, ought I remove this lovely, glistening treasure out of its privacy-providing home?

Yes . Far too close IMHO . Try Trost's weeping Dwarf birch if you like weeping birches - it wont eat your home .

should all trees be planted far away from building foundations? Is there a safe distance or safe trees?
