Hello, I'm brand new to forums - never posted before. I have an ornamental cherry tree in my front yard that was hit pretty hard by drought last summer and now appears to be dead. I know some plants can look dead but with some TLC be brought back, so at the risk of sounding stupid (not knowing if it's dead or not) I've registered here to see if there is anything I can do. This tree was here when I moved in 3 years ago, so I don't know a lot about it. It has been doing wonderfully until now. Last summer we had a pretty bad drought and a water moratorium. The tree is pretty big and the lower branches have been trimmed so one can walk under it. I guess I look down a lot because I confess I didn't notice that the leaves were all dried up untill one of my kids said something. I started watering it but I'm affraid it might have been too little too late. We've Now other trees are blooming and mine is doing nothing. I don't see any buds of leaves or flowers. I tugged on a few branches that I could reach and some snapped off, while others just bent. Today I actually cut off a few branches and they appear to be still viable, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Sorry to be so wordy - any advice? Thanks
I would think if you still see the green cambium when you cut a twig, that it is still alive. I had thought I lost my fig trees to cold and late frosts one year, but they did come back - in August!
