I have an opuntia named Benicio, that is 17 inches tall in total. He is 10 inches tall, with two ears coming out of the top of it that are 7 inches tall. He is a house plant.

At first, I thought he fell over due to his own weight. But then I realized at the bottom, in the mud,he had turned to a pale mush. So I took the Benicio out of his pot and cut him about an inch after the mush had stopped. should I repot all 17 inches of him in hopes that he grows? Or should I just use the ears as they are much smaller?

    Thanks.

Probably need to root the ears and give up on the pad that rotted.

I agree with Ron, just try rooting the ear pads. Opuntia should not be in a soil that could be described as mud. Make sure you use a cactus soil with good drainage. Allow the cut pads to dry out a bit before putting them in new soil.
