Seen end of June, beginning of July. This guy, and there were a couple of others nearby, has some characteristics of Helvella but I could not find anything like it. Brief description: a two-part fungus, with the inner part for all purposes like a brain mushroom, convoluted, dark brownish, but having an outer part, silvery-grey split in three sections like a protective shell (cranium?) being opened by growing inner part. Stem is fairly light, fluted, very much like some Helvellas. Overall height about 5 cm. Well, whatever! Pics should tell the tale. They are taken a week apart, with shell much more split apart and withering in the second one. Thanks for any pointers with ID.
