The old leaves always look rather dismal at this time of year. Should they be clipped off?

Can these hydrangeas be pruned and if so when and how much?

    Thanks for your help.

Hyrangea quercifolia is a deciduous plant normally. Perhaps the very mild winter has confused your plant! Removing the scruffy leaves is quite in order.

Pruning should be minimal for this hydrangea, just for shape as necessary. Pruning is best done in late winter.
