Hi, I have a Northern White cedar at the corner of my house which has been steadily getting browner as the summer progresses. It looks like it may be drought damage, but I have watered the tree regularly. There are three other cedars of the same variety which are in good condition. If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem may be or how to bring the cedat back to health it would be greatly appreciated. I am going to try and attach a few photos of the cedar as well. Thank you Vance
It's a Thuja, not a Cedar. Sorry, being that yellow-brown, it's dead now. Too late to do anything to save it.
Looks like Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd', now ubiquitous garden form of a tree often called NORTHERN WHITE CEDAR in North America. I've seen other conifers here go like yours did also. Local Cooperative Extension office may know the cause, before removing the carcass maybe contact them and ask what kind of samples they might require to figure out what happened. Might be something you will want to treat, probably good idea to see if what, exactly happened can be determined.
Maybe it is called Northern White Cedar because it is easier to pronounce. At least to me that would be easier for the common customer.
