Akebono in Tempe Knoll Dr. There are two lines of Akebono Cherry Trees in Tempe Knoll Dr. at Tempe Glen Dr. complete in bloom.
These 5 large trees are located just outside Park and Tilford Gardens in North Vancouver. - they are blooming later than Akebono's of similar size locally which are now losing their blossoms - these trees are not fully in bloom yet. - 2-3 branches start about 7 feet high off large sturdy trunks (so was unable to reach any blossoms) - photos of buds taken March 27th, the remainder today April 12th [edited by wcutler 2012apr14]: I've copied this from Ornamental Cherries, where it was posted to get an ID. These are 'Tai Haku'.
A large mature 'Yae-beni-shidare' 200 block of E. Keith Road and St. Andrews North Vancouver - added location to map And that's not some strange grafting around the trunk...it's a string of Christmas lights!
A small young 'Yae-beni-shidare' N.E corner of E. Keith Road at Ridgeway North Vancouver - added location to map
There are two young Yae-beni-shidare trees in bloom. The location is on the St. Patrick Ave. between E. 2nd Street and E. 3rd Street.
There are two cherry trees in bloom, but I don't know the cultivar's name. The location is on 2900 Duchess Ave.at East 29th street .
If Drive from LYNN VALLEY Center head to Lonsdale Ave. than can see a beautiful blooming 'Yae-beni-shidare' tree is in blooming on the right side of the east 29th street. near Tempe Glen Dr.
Photos 1 and 4 look like a Prunus salicina cultivar or hybrid, a type of plum. The other tree looks like 'Akebono'.
Two "Shirotae" blossoms are in full blooming. The location is at Jack Loucks Court - 100 block between W 1st Street and W 1st Street, North Vancouver.
(1) Many Kanzan blossoms which locate at left side of E. 29thStreet at Tempe Glen Dr. are not in bloom. (2) there are many Kanzan which are all around Tempe community such as Tempe Glen Dr. and Munday Pl , yet are not in bloom.
About this location - update on types of trees At first on the map it said 10 Akebono and then I changed it to read "5 Akebono and 5 of a later variety" Of the 10 trees - confirmed now that 6 are Akebono, 2 are Shirotae as per Susan's updated photos, and 2 are yet to bloom and have long stems with green leaves - stay tuned for more photos.
I have added this location of 'Tai Haku' to the North Vancouver map now - awaiting approval - fully in bloom.
This white tree on East 3rd St at St Andrews is on the map from a previous year. Here are some updated photos taken April 11th 2012 for further identification. It is no longer in bloom today April 18th. From post April 15, 2011:
Waterfront Park - Take pedestrian walkway west of Seabus Terminal / foot of Chesterfield Avenue North Vancouver. 'Shirotae' cherry tree photo taken at sunset April 13, 2012. Have added location to map.
Waterfront Park - Take pedestrian walkway west of Seabus Terminal / foot of Chesterfield Avenue North Vancouver. Two 'Akebono' cherry trees located near children's play area. Photo taken at sunset April 13, 2012. Have added location to map.
Waterfront Park - Take pedestrian walkway west of Seabus Terminal / foot of Chesterfield Avenue North Vancouver. 12 'Akebono' cherry trees located on the western side of Waterfront Park near the BCIT Marine Campus. Nice photo opportunities here as these trees are located on a slope with views across to the Vancouver skyline. Photos taken at sunset April 13, 2012. Have added location to map.
Gladstone Avenue outside western entrance to Park and Tilford Shopping Centre A mid-size 'Akebono' fills up an otherwise empty roundabout. Photos taken April 12th. Added location to map.
10 smaller 'Akebono' trees line the north side of East Keith Road 200 block between St. Andrews and St. Georges North Vancouver. Photos taken April 12th - have added location to map.
2 small 'Snow Goose' planted on the perimeter of the circular herb/vegetable garden at Park and Tilford Gardens North Vancouver. Only one tree is still in bloom. White blossom flowers look similar to the trees at 3rd and St. Andrews (see previous posts in the North Vancouver blog) which are listed as 'Umineko' or 'Snow Goose'. Added location to map.
Nicely formed 'Yae-beni-shidare' tree West Grand Boulevard corner of East 11th North Vancouver. Added to map.
2 large 'Shirotae' trees NW corner West 15th Street at Mahon. As these trees are quite large I thought they might be Avium Plena variety but on closer inspection there is some pink on the buds rather than being pure white. Added location to map.
The avium 'Plena' flowers are a bit smaller than I expected first time I saw them - not as large as 'Shirotae', and the sepals curl back the way avium species sepals generally do. They're also not out yet, though I saw just a few open flowers on them today in South Cambie on Heather (and now that I look, I see just a few on the one across the street from me). 'Shirotae' sepals are relatively large - maybe the largest ones I know, and are serrated. And the flowers should be fragrant. These look like pretty 'Shirotae', not ruined by pruning.
On a Birch Bark Cherry trunk. Douglas Justice told us that means there are two graftings - the one at the ground to graft the Birch Bark onto the avium or whatever rootstock, and then the one at the top to graft the 'Snow Goose' onto the Birch Bark. I find that very strange and not attractive.
