Recently I bought a Norfolk Pine for my daughter and her family. The last time I was there she was telling me that the plant's top half was very good... but the bottom branches were becoming very dry, brittle and turning brown. I would appreciate information from anyone who knows about this tree. My daughter has it in a south facing area...and in indirect light. I was wondering if a fertilizer might be needed? My gardening talents are very good...but this is my first experience with this type of pine. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Himmel
It could use brighter light for more hours a day, but in a quite-cool location with very good humidity (hard to do in an apt. or house with no such place. The big problem as well (I'm guessing) is that it's being watered all the time, but instead should be watered well when its done, but do it a Lot less often... unfortunately. it could even be too late. Look up 'care' for Araucaria araucana on Google and you'll see what I mean. They are hard to keep unless they have the right conditions - cool, bright, misty but allow the soil to dry out quite a bit before watering again.
The species you want to check info for is Araucaria heterophylla Agree with the rest - plenty of water, but let the soil get dryish between waterings, so it isn't waterlogged.
